About Our Prints

Giclée Printing

David W. Kelley?s West of the Moon Photography? is proud to offer giclée prints (pronounced "zhee-clay"). The word giclée is French and means ?to spray? as in spraying ink on paper. The giclée prints for sale here are created using state-of-the art ink jet printers utilizing pigment-based inks. The latest generation of pigment based inks represent a significant improvement over earlier inks, and these inks are different from the dye-based inks of most ink jet printers. The colors and range of tones are often better than what can be achieved using traditional photographic papers.

The Papers

The papers used for our prints, unless otherwise noted, are a luster, matte, or watercolor finish (depending on the requirements of the specific image). These papers have been developed especially for use with these inks, and the paper/ink combinations give an archival lifespan approaching one hundred years -- far exceeding the life span of the average photographic print.

The Process

These prints are produced directly from David W. Kelley?s Master Digital Files under his direct supervision. The sharpness and color of these prints are amazing, and they represent the state of the art in photographic printing. As always your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed.

Amazing Artists' Canvas Prints!

This is one of the most beautiful and unique ways to display your images. You may opt to have your image selection printed on a true artist's canvas which is then dry mounted to an acid free foam core base. These prints have an amazing painterly look and feel because they are printed on real painter's canvas. All are coated with a protective ultra-violet spray. This coating allows you to display your images without glass, and yet they will still last a lifetime.

"I believe this is one of the most exciting and beautiful ways to order your images.

Your friends and relatives will be amazed that your print originated as a photograph!"

-- David W. Kelley --

For limited edition images, the edition size still applies. Any canvas prints are simply part of the limited edition print run. Canvas prints, however, are not hand-signed and numbered, and canvas prints are not matted. Please use the "Contact" form in the drop down menu above if you are interested in a canvas print as not all images can be printed this way. For canvas print pricing see our price chart.

Images on the Web

Every attempt has been made to match the quality of the images displayed in our on-line Galleries to the quality of the actual prints. An exact match is not possible, however, due to the more limited color gamut of web colors and the vagaries of the various monitors on which the images will be viewed on-line. In general the actual prints will have a wider color gamut and better sharpness than the images as viewed on the web, and it is very possible that the print images may differ slightly in color and contrast from their on-line counterpart.

Digital Manipulation

Questions frequently arise about the digital darkroom and the amount of manipulation that has been applied to a particular image from the field to the print. Many images represented in this catalog were shot with film cameras using slide films. Digital cameras are just beginning to be useful to fine art photographers as the resolution of these cameras continues to improve. Slides are scanned into the computer using high resolution dedicated film scanners. For images captured with a digital camera the files are transferred to the computer.

The resulting digital image is then evaluated as to it?s fidelity to the original chrome or the original scene. Contrast, color correction, and sharpening tools are then applied sparingly while still allowing some room for artistic expression. For example, some images may have a digital filter applied (such as a ?watercolor? filter) for a particular artistic effect. The resulting digital file is then archived and the entire edition is printed from this digital file called the Master Scan. It should be noted that most ?tools? used in the digital darkroom have an historic counterpart in the photographer?s traditional ?wet? darkroom.

Any images herein that are highly digitally manipulated will be self-evident (montage and collage) or will be captioned as such.

Our Guarantee

Very simple. Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. I believe these are the highest quality photographic prints you could purchase, but if you are not satisfied I will refund your money. Period!

Displaying Your Prints

Proper framing and display conditions are necessary to assure longevity of any work of art, and the prints offered for sale here are no exception. High heat and humidity should be avoided, and prints should never be hung where they will be exposed to direct sunlight. The use of "acid free" materials in matting and framing are highly recommended as well as the use of ultra-violet blocking glass. If there are any questions regarding these prints, their proper display, or the printing process, please send an inquiry for additional information by using our "Contact" form in the menu above.
